Volume 8 from The Journal’s landmark series about the world’s great waves and how they affect our surfing culture. This special edition of The Surfer’s Journal looks at three prime surfing destinations: Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, Grajagan, Indonesia and Tavarua, Fiji. Oceans apart from one another, these three breaks are connected by the idea that perfect surf, while rare, is scattered to the four corners of the world, and that the cartography of great waves remains an unfinished job: Grajagan was virtually unknown 20 years ago; Tavarua was only introduced to the surf world at large in the mid-1980’s. But if these breaks don’t have an old and dusty lineage compared to Malibu, Waimea or Narrabeen, each one has nonetheless grown its own rich past. Randy Rarick remembers standing on the point at Jeffreys during a 10’ swell and watching a 65-wave set roll through. Former world champion Derek Ho recalls his career-ending injury at Grajagan. The best surfers from the ‘70’s recovered past glory in a first-of-its-kind Masters event at Tavarua in 1997.
